As you choose a neighbourhood for your new home, you have to think about many different factors. There’s good schools, proximity to your favourite amenities, and of course the overall “feel” of the neighbourhood itself. However, some would argue that there’s nothing more important than the type of commute that you’ll be dealing with.

You have to work to pay your mortgage, but you’ll want to spend as much time in your new home with your family as you can. The longer it takes you to get to work, the less time you have at home. Many people look for communities that are close to work, though some don’t mind a longer drive if it means they get to live in the right community.

We’ve put together this guide to help you understand what the commute might look like from the communities that we build in.

Savanna

In the northeast part of the city, Savanna offers families convenience and a comfortable lifestyle. There are large lots available so your family can spend time relaxing together outside and the amenities you want are nearby.

Savanna also offers convenience when it comes to the daily commute. It’s set inside the city’s perimeter, so you’ll enjoy a commute that’s under 25 minutes if you’re heading to the downtown area. Those who are looking for public transportation will be happy as well. There’s a bus that will take you downtown in about 45 minutes. If you’re walking to the bus stop, you can count that as your daily exercise.

Where Savanna really shines, though, is with its proximity to the airport. You can reach the airport by car in less than 15 minutes. 

Walden

People are flocking to Walden for its natural beauty, protected wetland areas, and the variety of lots and home styles available in this community.

To get downtown, you’ll have a straight and uncomplicated commute. It can take you anywhere between 25 and 30 minutes to get to your workplace. Taking public transit the entire way downtown takes a bit over an hour, but you can use that time to relax. Looking for a happy medium? You can cut the commute time by driving to the LRT station instead of taking the bus there. Then, you get a more convenient ride without having to worry about downtown traffic.

If you travel a lot, you’ll be happy to know that the drive to the airport is only 36 minutes. That’s the most convenient way to get there.

Wedderburn

Wedderburn in Okotoks, appeals to people who are looking for a community with a small-town feel. You’ll get a beautiful new home in a community you can be proud of.

Despite being just outside of Calgary, there’s a quick commute to the downtown Calgary area. It takes just a little more than half an hour, and it’s primarily along major highways. You’ll need the car, though, because there are not currently any public transportation options into the city from Wedderburn.

Drake Landing

Also in Okotoks, Drake Landing has been filling up quickly, and there are only a few lots left. The homes here have grand exteriors and families like the wide pathways that extend throughout the community. 

Just like Wedderburn, the commute from Drake Landing is just a bit over 30 minutes to get to Calgary's downtown core. That’s not too bad considering the type of quiet lifestyle you'll enjoy in this area.

The Right Community and the Right Commute for You

We’ve focused on the importance of having a good commute, but you always have to remember that work situations can change. People often change their jobs over the years, and that can mean working in a different location. The key is to find a community that’s close to major highways. Fortunately, all of the communities we build in provide easy access to the highways, so you won’t have to worry about the commute, no matter where you end up working.

Additionally, we’ve focused on the commute to the downtown area because we know that’s where a lot of the jobs are located. However, plenty of people work in places like hospitals, schools, and retail locations that are found in more residential areas. You can easily choose to build in a community close to where you work. You could have a commute that’s under 15 minutes.
