Planning a Halloween party can be a fun project for the whole family. Making your own refreshments, costumes and décor can contribute to your party's success. But what should you make? Don't worry, we've got you covered!

Here are some ideas to consider as your Halloween party planning gets underway.

Eats & Treats

Monster Cupcakes

Give your Halloween party cupcakes some scary flair with the help of some green buttercream frosting, chocolate sprinkles and brown M&Ms. One of the best things about this treat is you can get your kids to help design a plate full of cupcakes that look remarkably like Frankenstein’s monster and his bride.

Strawberry Ghosts

If you’re looking for something super easy, you’ve landed on the right snack! Wash a dozen strawberries, melt some white chocolate and dip your strawberries in the chocolate. Let them set for a couple of minutes on a piece of parchment paper. Finally, give each one two eyes and a mouth using mini-chocolate chips.

Ghost Pizza

Buy a bag of regular-sized plain bagels, a jar of pizza sauce and a bag of shredded mozzarella cheese. Using a spoon, put a thin layer of pizza sauce on each bagel. Next, place a ghost-shaped cookie cutter on a bagel and sprinkle mozzarella cheese inside it. Do this for every bagel, then put them on a cookie sheet to bake at 350 degrees for about ten minutes. Make some eyes for your ghosts using pieces of black olives.

Halloween Trail Mix

Give your guests a bowl of trail mix with a twist. Combine traditional ingredients such as pretzels, nuts and Chex mix. Next, add in some candy corn, marshmallow pumpkins and M&Ms. Your guests will be thrilled!

Costumes

Rosie the Riveter

Celebrate the power of women by dressing up like the woman on the poster from WWII. All you need is a dark blue denim button-down shirt, jeans and a red bandana with white polka dots to tie up your hair. Don’t forget your bright red lipstick!

Error 404

Chances are, you’ve run into the error 404 message on your computer. Why not dress up like that familiar message? Get a plain white t-shirt and print out the words, ‘Error 404. Costume Not Found.’ You can use a black marker or stick-on letters from a craft store.

The Nerd

Celebrate nerds the world over by dressing up as the prototypical nerd. Put on a white button up shirt and pants with suspenders. Find some plain black eyeglasses and wrap white medical tape around the bridge of the glasses. Stick a pocket protector in your pocket, grab a calculator and give your hair a messy look.

Superman and Lois Lane

This is a fun costume idea for a couple. The man can put on a Superman t-shirt underneath an unbuttoned plain white shirt. Add in plain black glasses to look like Clark Kent changing into Superman. The Lois Lane costume can be as simple as a button-down blouse, a vest and pleated skirt. Eyeglasses, a note pad and pencil are excellent props. Create a press pass on the computer to round out your Lois Lane look.

Décor

A Bat Tree

If you have a vase of bare tree branches in your home, then you’re halfway there. Make your arrangement of branches into a bat tree by making tiny black bats with construction paper and glitter.

Ghostly Pathway Lights

Start to put aside plastic gallon milk jugs in the weeks before your Halloween party. After washing them thoroughly, air dry them and cut a hole in the back of each one. Make the hole big enough to fit an LED tea light inside the jug. Get the kids to help you draw ghost faces with black marker on each jug. Then, on the night of your party, put an LED tea light in each jug and arrange them on the border of your front walk.

Vases with a Candy Theme

If you have some clear glass vases around your home, fill them with layers of candy. You could put in a two-inch layer of candy corn, then a two-inch layer of marshmallow bats and so on. This is a piece of décor your guests can admire and dip into as well.

A Mummy Door

Attach long strips of white gauze across your front door. Next, cut two large white circles from construction paper and two smaller black circles from black paper. Glue the black circles on top of the white circles to make eyes. Tape those two eyes on top of your gauzy front door to make a mummy.

Finally, don’t forget to play a spooky soundtrack to set the perfect atmosphere. With all of your preparations, your Halloween party is sure to be the hit of the neighbourhood!
